Before railroads crossed Maine, distance was measured differently. A trip that takes a few hours today could consume days. Vacationers from Boston and beyond could reach Maine’s mountains, lakes, and seashore without spending days on the road.
The railroad did more than make travel faster. It changed the economic geography of Maine.

BEFORE THE LOCOMOTIVE
In the early 1800s, Maine moved at the pace of horses, tides, currents, and weather.
Roads could be little more than rough dirt tracks. Spring mud made travel difficult. Winter snow could isolate communities.
Rivers offered important transportation corridors, but they flowed where geography dictated rather than where people necessarily wanted to go.
Coastal schooners carried freight between ports, but inland communities remained much harder to reach.

In 1836, the Bangor and Piscataquis Canal and Railroad Company was chartered.
Then, in 1837, the Calais Railroad began operating.

They proved that railroads could work in Maine.

BUILDING THROUGH MAINE WAS NEVER EASY
Putting rails across Maine required more than laying track across flat ground.

STEEL BEGINS CONNECTING THE STATE
By the middle and later nineteenth century, isolated railroad projects were becoming networks.
Tracks began linking Maine’s commercial centers with rural communities, ports, mills, farms, forests, and neighboring states.
One of the most important companies was the Maine Central Railroad, established in 1862.
Its lines helped connect major communities such as:
- Portland
- Augusta
- Waterville
- Bangor
and numerous smaller places in between.
Suddenly, distance between these communities became less significant. A journey once measured in days could increasingly be measured in hours.

THE TRAIN CHANGED WHAT A TOWN COULD BE
Before railroads, a community’s prosperity often depended heavily upon nearby waterways or local markets.
Railroads changed that equation.
- A town with a station could suddenly send products hundreds of miles away.
- Businesses could receive supplies reliably.
- Mail arrived faster.
- Travelers came through regularly.
- Hotels and stores appeared near depots.
- Industries located themselves where rail access was convenient.

MAINE CENTRAL & THE GROWING NETWORK
The Maine Central became one of the most influential rail systems in the state’s history.
Its routes connected important population centers and industrial communities while linking with other railroads extending beyond Maine.
That network helped create something Maine had never possessed on the same scale:
Reliable inland transportation.
Products no longer had to wait for rivers to rise or roads to dry. Industries could plan shipments more predictably. People could travel regardless of whether the destination sat beside navigable water.
The railroad weakened one of geography’s oldest restrictions.

PORTLAND BECOMES A RAIL GATEWAY
Portland’s importance grew substantially during the railroad era.
- The city already possessed an excellent harbor.
- Rail connections made that harbor even more valuable.
The Grand Trunk Railway helped establish important transportation links between Portland and Canada, opening routes that connected Maine with much larger commercial networks.
- Freight arriving by rail could transfer to ships.
- Goods arriving by sea could continue inland.
This combination of railroad and deep-water port strengthened Portland’s role as one of northern New England’s major transportation centers.
MAINE, CANADA & THE WORLD BEYOND
Railroads did not stop at state boundaries. Their real power came from connection. A Maine train could join another railroad. That line connected to another.
Eventually goods originating in a small Maine community could travel across New England and far beyond.
International connections with Canada gave Maine businesses access to still larger markets. The state was no longer dependent only upon its immediate neighbors.
Maine became part of a continental transportation network.

THE BOSTON CONNECTION
The Boston & Maine Railroad created another enormously important relationship. Boston had long influenced Maine economically and culturally.
Rail travel dramatically shortened the practical distance between them.
- For Maine residents, Boston became easier to reach.
- For people in Massachusetts, Maine became easier to visit.
That second development helped launch an entirely new industry.
Tourism.
WHEN TOURISTS DISCOVERED MAINE BY TRAIN
The railroad arrived at precisely the right moment for Maine’s growing reputation as a vacation destination.
Industrial cities were becoming crowded. Urban residents had money and leisure time.
Railroads offered them something irresistible:

FREIGHT WAS THE REAL ENGINE
Passenger trains attracted attention. Freight paid many of the bills.

The railroad car became one of the most important tools in Maine’s industrial economy.

LOGGING LEAVES THE RIVER
Few industries benefited from railroads more dramatically than logging.
For generations, Maine timber had depended heavily upon rivers.

- Then crews waited for spring runoff.
- River drives carried the timber downstream.
That system worked. But it had obvious limitations.

WHEN MAINE SHIPPED ICE
One of the most fascinating freight businesses of the railroad era was ice. Before electric refrigeration, ice was harvested from frozen ponds and rivers during winter.
Large blocks were cut, stored in insulated ice houses, and shipped to cities. Railroads allowed Maine ice to travel great distances.
A frozen pond in rural Maine could supply refrigeration in a city far to the south. It was an industry built entirely upon something Mainers had in abundance:
Winter.
FARMERS FIND NEW MARKETS
Agriculture changed as well. A farmer had always been limited partly by how far products could travel before spoiling. Railroads expanded that distance.
Maine farms could send:
- milk
- butter
- apples
- potatoes
- blueberries
- livestock
- other produce
to consumers much farther away.
The train allowed a rural farm to participate in an urban economy. That connection helped sustain communities that might otherwise have remained dependent only upon nearby markets.

MAINE’S LITTLE TRAINS
While standard-gauge railroads connected major towns and cities, Maine became famous for another kind of railway.
The two-foot narrow gauge.
These tiny railroads became one of the most distinctive chapters in Maine transportation history.
Their rails were only two feet apart.
Compared with conventional railroads, the locomotives and cars looked almost miniature. But in isolated rural communities, they performed enormous jobs.
WHY TWO FEET?
Maine’s geography made conventional railroad construction expensive.
Standard tracks required wider rights-of-way, larger bridges, and more substantial construction.
Two-foot railroads offered a cheaper alternative.
Their advantages included:
- tighter curves
- lighter bridges
- smaller locomotives
- reduced construction costs
- ability to handle difficult terrain
A narrow gauge railroad could reach a community where building a full-size railroad might never make economic sense.
For many isolated places, that made all the difference.

THE SANDY RIVER & RANGELEY LAKES
Among Maine’s most famous narrow gauge systems was the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad. Its tracks wound through western Maine mountain country.
The railroad served both industry and recreation.
- It carried timber.
- It supplied rural communities.
- It transported mail and freight.
And it carried sportsmen and vacationers into the Rangeley Lakes region.
That combination perfectly reflected Maine railroading.
The same train could serve a logging operation & a wilderness resort.
BRIDGTON & SACO RIVER
The Bridgton and Saco River Railroad became another important narrow gauge line.
It connected communities with larger transportation systems while serving local industries and residents.
- Trains hauled freight.

- Vacationers reached lake country.
The little railroad became woven into daily life. For people who depended upon it, the size of the track hardly mattered.
What mattered was connection.

WISCASSET, WATERVILLE & FARMINGTON
The Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway became another icon of Maine’s two-foot era.
Its trains carried an astonishing variety of cargo:
- lumber
- farm products
- supplies
- passengers
- livestock
Railroads like this could function almost like moving general stores.
They brought communities what they needed and carried away what those communities produced.
THE TRAIN WAS PART OF DAILY LIFE
For rural Mainers, a train was not always something dramatic or glamorous.

- Stores received merchandise.
- Families traveled to visit relatives.
- Mail arrived.
- Doctors could reach communities more quickly.

DEPOTS BECAME COMMUNITY LANDMARKS
Every railroad needed stations. Many Maine depots became some of the most important buildings in their communities.
People gathered there to:

- board passenger trains

The station platform became a meeting place between local life and the larger world. A whistle in the distance announced more than a train.

THE RAILROAD CHANGED TIME

THEN THE AUTOMOBILE ARRIVED

Then another revolution began.

After World War II, car ownership expanded rapidly.
Americans increasingly wanted something railroads could not easily provide:
door-to-door freedom.
THE STATION BEGINS TO EMPTY
During the 1950s and 1960s, passenger numbers declined.
People no longer needed to plan trips around railroad schedules.
- They could leave home when they wanted.
- They could stop where they wanted.
- They could drive directly to their destination.
Railroads responded by reducing passenger service.
- Routes disappeared.
- Stations closed.
- Buildings once filled with travelers grew quiet.
The familiar rhythm of arriving and departing passenger trains began disappearing from many Maine communities.

TRUCKS TAKE THE FREIGHT
Freight rail faced competition as well. Improved highways allowed trucks to move products directly from a business to a customer.
There was no need to haul freight to a station, load a train, unload elsewhere, and transfer to another vehicle. For smaller shipments, trucking could be faster and more flexible.
Railroads began abandoning lightly used branches.
- Rails were removed.
- Bridges disappeared.
- Forests grew back over old rights-of-way.
The great railroad map of Maine began shrinking.
WHEN THE TRACKS DISAPPEARED
An abandoned railroad leaves behind a strange landscape. The rails may be gone. The station may be gone.
But the railroad’s shape remains.
- A long, unnaturally level corridor cuts through the woods.
- A stone bridge abutment stands beside a stream.
- A raised embankment crosses a wetland.

OLD RAILBEDS FIND NEW LIVES
Many abandoned railroad corridors eventually became recreational trails. Their construction made them almost perfectly suited to new uses. Railroads generally needed gentle grades.
That made old railbeds appealing for:

- snowmobiling
- ATV riding
- cross-country skiing
The locomotives disappeared. People returned on foot, bicycle, and snowmobile.
The transportation corridor survived even though its purpose changed.
THE RAILROAD ERA DIDN’T COMPLETELY END
Railroads still operate in Maine. Freight continues to move by rail. Industrial customers still depend upon trains for large shipments.
And in southern Maine, regular passenger trains returned in a major way with the Amtrak Downeaster. Since 2001, the Downeaster has connected Maine with Boston and other communities along the route.
The passenger train that seemed destined to disappear completely found a new role.

THE DOWNEASTER BRINGS PASSENGERS BACK
The Downeaster represents a different era of rail travel.
Modern passengers may include:
- commuters

- tourists
- business travelers
- families
The cars are modern. The infrastructure has changed.
But the basic appeal remains remarkably similar to what attracted nineteenth-century travelers:
- Sit down.
- Watch the landscape pass.
- Arrive without having to drive.
The technology changed. The pleasure of traveling by rail did not.
SAVING MAINE’S NARROW GAUGE HISTORY
Maine’s unusual narrow gauge tradition has inspired especially strong preservation efforts. Historic locomotives and cars have survived because museums, volunteers, and railroad enthusiasts chose to save them.
Today, historic rail operations allow visitors to experience a small piece of the world that once connected rural Maine. Preserved locomotives do more than entertain.
